“The Decision” of 2010

Boston Celtics v Cleveland Cavaliers, Game Two

Midway through the 2009-10 season, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ guards experienced a great amount of significant injuries, which forced Lebron James to fill in temporarily at the Point Guard Position. His statistical production improved, averaging 29.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 8.6 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1 block per game on 50 percent shooting, which earned him his second consecutive MVP award. Cleveland also finished with a 61-21 record, the league’s best. In the playoffs, the Cavaliers beat the Chicago Bulls in the first round, but was defeated in the second round by the Boston Celtics. James was heavily criticized in the Game 5 of the series, shooting a horrible 20 percent from the field and scoring 15 points. The team suffered it’s worst loss in franchise history and was Lebron was booed off the court from his home crowd. Lebron James and his Cavaliers were officially eliminated from the NBA Playoffs in Game 6, with James putting up 27 points, 19 rebounds, 10 assists, and 9 turnovers.

It is possible that the booing from his home crowd affected his decision to leave Cleveland, as Lebron James “took his talents to South Beach”, better known as the Miami Heat. In a 1 hour segment on ESPN, Lebron announced to the world that he would indeed be leaving Cleveland for Miami, which instantly villainized him throughout the league. This was due to the fact that he combined forces with 1-time NBA Champion Dwyane Wade, and All-Star Chris Bosh. By joining them in Miami, Lebron effectively made them a “superteam,” and made them instant title favourites. The hate for Lebron was real, with remarks from analysts, specifically Stephen A. Smith, calling him “the weakest superstar we’ve ever seen, mentally.”
